FIG2026 will be one of the largest gatherings of surveyors, geospatial experts, policymakers, and innovators.

Why Volunteer?

The FIG2026 Volunteer Programme will allow volunteers who do not qualify for funding, to attend some of the sessions at the congress.

Volunteers will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth running of the Congress and will enjoy unique benefits, including:

  • Free registration for the Congress, exhibition, and welcome function.

  • Meals and refreshments during shifts.

  • A certificate of appreciation to enhance your CV.

  • The chance to network with global leaders in surveying, geomatics, and geospatial sciences.

Roles Available

Volunteers will be required to support the organisers in different areas, including:

  • Venue ushers & hall monitors

  • Directional ushers & hosts

  • Branding & sponsorship assistants

  • Exhibition and General Assembly runners

  • Bag-packing

  • Social event ushers

Whether you’re guiding delegates, supporting technical sessions, or helping with logistics, your contribution will be central to creating a memorable experience for all.

Who Can Apply?

The programme is open to:

  • Students, interns, and junior employees in the surveying, geomatics, or geospatial field.

  • Unemployed graduates looking to gain exposure.

  • Retired professionals who wish to give back to the profession.

Applicants should meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Proficiency in English (other languages are very welcome as support for certain job categories)
  • Ability to commit to at least two shifts (6 to 8 hours each) between 23-29 May 2026.
  • Have access to an active e-mail address and cell phone for contact with managers of the programme.
  • Ability to travel to the conference venue unassisted financially.
  • Able to pay for or arrange for their own accommodation in Cape Town.
  • Understand that their commitment to work means that people are depending on them to be there to perform their assigned tasks. Punctuality and hospitality are essential.
  • Ability to attend training sessions one day prior to the conference and help one day after the conference (T.B.A).
  • Be organized, motivated and enthusiastic.
  • Possesses good communication skills and the ability to think on their feet; able to work as a team and able to deal with large groups of people in a stressful environment.
  • Should take ownership of the programme activities with minimal supervision – certain job descriptions entail supervisory roles.
  • Ability to take instructions and follow instructions and deal with onsite problems.
  • Proficiency in social media.

Highly desired attributes

  • Ability to speak an additional African; European language, or Mandarin/Cantonese
  • A background in event or geomatics (essential) and
  • Previous conference experience; (not essential.

Applications open on 1 January 2026 and close on 13 March 2026. Spaces are limited, so don’t miss out!

You’ll need to submit:

  • A copy of an identity document or passport.
  • Proof of registration at a tertiary institution in the field of surveying, geomatics, or event management
  • A letter of appointment for interns and junior employees, or proof of previous employment in the surveying, geomatics, or geospatial industry for retired and other professionals.
  • A short CV (maximum 1 page) detailing relevant experience and skills.
  • A written motivation in English (250 words).
  • If proficient in other languages, a translated version of motivation
