About FIG

International Federation of Surveyors, FIG

The International Federation of Surveyors is an UN- recognized non-government organisation (NGO) whose purpose is to support international collaboration for the progress of surveying in all fields and applications. As a federation, FIG represents national member associations, ministries, government agencies, universities and corporates within the surveying and geospatial profession, covering the whole range of professional fields within the global community and represents more than 120 countries throughout the world. FIG was founded in 1878 in Paris and was known as the Fédération Internationale des Géomètres. This has become anglicized to the International Federation of Surveyors.

In order to provide an international forum for discussion and development aiming to promote professional practice and standards FIG organises a yearly event, spread around the world (Congress every four years and in between Working Weeks). The FIG General Assembly elects the future destinations, and the FIG leadership, FIG Council, Commissions, Networks, Task Forces, with the FIG office work closely together with a Local Organising Committee from the destination for the preparations of the event.
